April 14, 2025 2Gen Impact: How a Leprechaun Trap Strengthened Family Ties Creating Connection Through Play and Building Supportive Relationships When Mikey’s class was assigned a leprechaun trap project, his Friend, John, saw more than just a fun activity—he saw an opportunity to engage Mikey’s dad. As a single dad, he has struggled to be engaged with Mikey’s teacher. As a trusted mentor, John serves as a liaison with the school, helping to advocate for Mikey’s needs and stay on top of what’s happening. Knowing Mikey’s dad hadn’t been involved much with school assignments, John picked up supplies and shared the project with him, sparking a weekend of creativity and teamwork between father and son. On Monday, Mikey proudly brought the trap to class. At Friends of the Children–Western Montana, our long-term, 2Gen approach ensures that children have a committed Friend while also engaging caregivers in ways that strengthen family bonds, build confidence, and create lasting change. *Friends of the Children – Western Montana changes the names of youth when sharing stories of impact. We do not pair photos of children with their own stories.
