Friends of the Children–Western Montana Named Nonprofit of the Year by Montana Children’s Trust Fund

Friends of the Children–Western Montana has been named the 2025 Nonprofit of the Year by the Montana Children’s Trust Fund, in recognition of its exceptional commitment to strengthening families and preventing child maltreatment through trauma-informed, community-driven programming.

The Children’s Trust Fund annually honors one nonprofit that demonstrates excellence in supporting families through innovative practices, engaging caregivers in meaningful ways, and building partnerships that enhance community wellbeing. Established by the Montana Legislature in 1985, the Trust Fund serves as the state’s lead agency for the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

Friends of the Children–Western Montana currently operates two program sites—one in Missoula and one on the Flathead reservation. In 2025, both programs will collectively serve over 100 youth and provide wraparound support to more than 500 family members.

“We are deeply honored to receive this recognition from the Montana Children’s Trust Fund,” said Ben Davis, Executive Director of Friends of the Children–Western Montana. “This award is a powerful affirmation of our long-term model, and of our mentors, who walk alongside children and families for 12+ years, no matter what.”

The organization pairs youth facing the greatest obstacles with professional mentors—called Friends—who provide consistent, one-on-one support from kindergarten through high school graduation. Its two-generation (2Gen) approach also supports caregivers with resources, parenting support, and system navigation to help families thrive.

“This recognition is not just a celebration of our work—it’s a celebration of the families we serve,” said Barbara Frank, Board Chair of Friends of the Children–Western Montana. “We are proud to stand with them and with communities across the state working to end child maltreatment.”
