February 10, 2025 Friends of the Children Adds Family Engagement Specialist Lake County Leader | January 23, 2025 12:00 AM Friends of the Children–Western Montana has expanded its Flathead Nation program with the addition of a family engagement specialist. Polson resident Becky Slater will fill the role, offering two-generation support to families on the Flathead Reservation and advancing the organization’s mission to break cycles of generational poverty and trauma. Friends of the Children–Western Montana seeks to drive generational change by empowering youth through long-term relationships with salaried, professional mentors – known as Friends – who support each child from kindergarten through high school graduation, for 12-plus years. In 2024, the organization launched its Flathead Nation program, specifically tailored to address the unique needs of Indigenous youth and families. The program emphasizes culturally responsive mentoring and incorporates guidance from an advisory committee of tribal elders and leaders. “The Flathead Nation program recognizes the importance of cultural identity and family engagement in youth well-being,” said program director Nicole Callahan. “Adding a Family Engagement Specialist allows us to provide more holistic support and ensure families have access to essential resources.” Read the full article by Lake County Leader here.
